A limerick is often a funny poem with a strong beat. Limericks are very light hearted poems and can sometimes be utter nonsense.


The Structure of a Limerick Poem


A Limerick consists of five lines.

external image bullet.png The first line of a limerick poem usually begins with 'There was a....' and ends with a name, person or place.

external image bullet.png The last line of a limerick is normally a little farfetched or unusual.

external image bullet.png A limerick should have a rhyme scheme of aabba:

external image bullet.png This means lines 1,2 and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 **rhyme**.

external image bullet.png Also, lines 1,2 and 5 should have 7 – 10 **syllables** and lines 3 and 4 should have 5 – 7 **syllables**.

Paraphrased Shakespearean Sonnets

Rules & Rhyme Scheme* Shakespearean sonnets are broken into 4 sections, calledquatrains.
  • They maintain a strict rhyme scheme:
      • ABAB CDCD EFEF // GG
  • The sonnet must have 14 lines.
  • Each line has 10 syllables.
  • Each line usually rhymes using the following syllable pattern:
    • soft-LOUD-soft-LOUD-soft-LOUD-soft-LOUD-soft-LOUD
  • Sonnets often describe a problem and solution, or question and answer.
